On New Year's Day, Ken opened his email to find a long letter of gratitude for the podcast. It came from a person he'd never met. An emerging leader and Bible teacher, her world was shaken when many of the women in her organization's Bible study group and church became Trump supporters. Kristyn shares her faith journey from her early years raised by a single mother. After years of fertility treatment, she delivered the first of two children. At that time, she became a devoted Jesus-follower and serious Bible student. She emerged as a discussion leader for six years and then another seven years as a certified teaching leader (the weekly lecturer) in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) in the Detroit area. BSF is a global organization drawing folks around the world into intense, in-depth study of the Bible. (Coincidentally, Ken's mother was also a Teaching Leader for BSF in the 70s and 80s.) Kristyn came to connect the strict rules and fundamentalist doctrine with a religious conservatism that fuels a toxic form of Trumpism, despite the clear contradictions. She felt alone and disconnected until she found resources (including books and podcasts) that helped her understand - there are many of us recovering fundamentalists out there. It's a sweet conversation that affirms faith, life, and genuine friendship.

From Kristyn’s January 1, 2024 Message to Ken –

Hi Ken and Happy New Year,

I stumbled upon your podcast this summer. I am so very pleased to have found such a positive, upbeat, and helpful podcast surrounding this extremely difficult time in my life. You and all of your guests understand so well the heart and empathy needed as people navigate these deep and murky waters out of the evangelical conditioning. After years of swimming in these waters I found myself in a Detroit area BSF class. I learned more about the Bible than I could have ever imagined.
