December 29, 2024

Send us a text

Ken welcomes Nate Manderson back as we close out our year and Season 5. Nate’s rich experience as a pastor, an educator, and an advocate for the working class has made him a popular writer for The Boston Globe and Salon.com. His most recent piece is entitled, How the left can get its mojo back: Listen to working-class people of faith. It’s a rich analysis of where the Democrats got it wrong in the Presidential election. Ken and Nate review the election and fill it in with Nate’s considerable experience in Boston schools from elementary to high school to community college. He connects with the labor force and the Latino community and helps us understand how Donald Trump managed to win a high degree of unlikely support. Ken and Nate get ready for the challenges of a new year. SHOW NOTES

S5E11 Nate Manderson: Working Class Voters and Camino de Santiago (Spain)

February 20, 2024

Ken Kemp

Send us a text

Ken welcomes back essayist, teacher, guidance counselor, and ordained minister Nathaniel Manderson from his home in Boston. Last Summer, Nate took thirty days to walk the 500 mile Camino do Santiago pilgrimage tradition says was taken by St. James, the Apostle. It's the same journey memorialized by the Emilio Estevez film starring his father, Martin Sheen called The Way. Nate shares his remarkable journey - the prompting to go, the people he met, lessons along the way, and the intensely emotional climax that final day as he entered the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela (consecrated in 1211 C.E.) Just a few days before their conversation, Nate's most recent opinion piece was published in the Boston Globe entitled Democrats: Let Me (Re)Introduce You to the Working Class. Even with his advanced academic degrees, he considers himself a member of that working class. Nate is a contributor to the popular news site SALON. His author page makes the introduction:

Nathaniel Manderson was educated at a conservative seminary, trained as a minister, ordained through the American Baptist Churches USA and guided by liberal ideals. Throughout his career he has been a pastor, a career counselor, an academic adviser, a high school English teacher and an advocate for first-generation and low-income students, along with a paper delivery man, a construction worker, a FedEx package handler and whatever else he could do to take care of his family.

S4E3 Rev. Nate Manderson - J6 Committee and Religion Ignored

January 17, 2023

Ken Kemp

Send us a text

Ken welcomes back writer, former pastor, and educator, Rev. Nathaniel Manderson. As the year begins, Ken invites former guests who share a common perspective on politics and religion. Ken and Nate discuss his recent article, published last fall on Salon.com.  Entitled, "Theological pandemic: Why evangelicals embraced Jan. 6 and the Big Lie," they explore the question: why did the J6 committee fail to expose the religious leaders and religious ideas that energized and prompted the assault on the Capitol? How is it that many "evangelicals" resonate with the dark, destructive agenda (stolen election, anti-immigrant, anti-feminist, anti-government) promoted by the former president? We can not ignore the obvious religious aspect of J6. Nate is an unapologetic, committed Christian who is currently teaching in the Chelsea Public School District in Boston's inner city.  He views the obsessions of the religious right as antithetical to a genuine commitment to the Gospel of Jesus. S3E47 Rev. Nathaniel Manderson on Hypocrisy, Humor and the ongoing Culture War

July 08, 2022

Ken Kemp

Send us a text

Ken welcomes back Nate Manderson, the guest who became one of Ken's most popular interviews. An outspoken and deeply committed Christian, Nate writes regularly for Salon.com.  He's a fierce critic of the brand of conservative evangelicalism that lines up behind the former President and (his) Supreme Court. According to Nate, many evangelicals have become modern-day Pharisees. Proximity to power becomes more important than Christian character.  Nate gives his take on the reversal of Roe v. Wade. Ken and Nate share their separate experiences in Glendora, Mississippi, where Emmett Till was brutally murdered. Ken concludes that Nate's life is remarkably "Jesus-like." His writing has called out struggling pastors, wounded Christians, and curious seekers - he's an encourager and thinker of the first rank.  SHOW NOTES

S2E80 Nathaniel Manderson - Texas Law and Evangelicals

November 02, 2021

Ken Kemp

Send us a text

Ken welcomes author, activist and pastor Nathaniel Manderson. After reading Nate's article on Salon.com ("Evangelical Theology Is What Made the Texas Abortion Outrage Possible"), Ken reached out to learn more. Nate agreed to a podcast interview. We learn that Nate, an ordained Baptist minister, is, like Ken, a seminary graduate (M. Div., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston). They compare academic notes. Nate finished his undergraduate degree from UMass Dartmouth where he (the only male in the class) made a presentation on the Promise Keepers in his class on Women's studies. The two discuss the rise of Donald Trump as standard-bearer for evangelicalism, the effort to undo Roe v. Wade, LGBTQ inclusion and the current divide over race in America. Ken asks Nate to respond to "The Five Things You Cannot Say in Church." You'll find links to more of Nate's work in the expanded Show Notes.
