The Beached White Male Podcast with Ken Kemp

Inaugural Episode: Theon Hill - Race in Rhetoric

February 11, 2018

Theon Hill

Send us a text

Ken interviews Dr. Theon Hill about Race in America: his journey from his undergraduate years at Bob Jones University to a Doctor of Philosophy from Purdue University. He currently is Professor of Communication at Wheaton College. This episode is the FIRST time Ken Kemp appears as "The Beached White Male." While the sound quality is lacking (thanks to those early days mastering the tech issues), the message is powerful - even prophetic.  See SHOW NOTES:  https://thebeachedwhitemale.com/theon_hill/

Ken’s MEMO to Dr. Hill re “The BWM Podcast”

Wednesday, 31 JAN 2018

To: Theon Hill, PhD
From: Ken (Beached White Male – BWM)
RE: Podcast Interview

First of all, thanks, Theon, for your interest and your enthusiasm for this crazy project. Here are some thoughts regarding our recorded interview. As we discussed, I’m planning to produce a demo version of the podcast – Beached White Male (for future broadcast).

Since the milestone impact of the 9/11 attack, the BWM has been fascinated by what Brian McLaren calls “The Great Spiritual Migration.” According to McLaren, thinking people of faith have been rewriting their tribal narratives in earnest. For the BWM, whose cultural tribe has been white evangelicalism, the popular assumption that all evangelicals identify with alt-right conservatism must be challenged.

  1. Ken,
Another great job drawing out your guest and offers listeners something to think about. I’d love to meet Theon sometime since I’m part of an organization that also explores issues of race and identity, The Chicago Center. My take away: action as rhetoric.
